All retired employees renewing CCW’s (HR-218 and California only) must take a department ID and driver’s license to the Sheriff’s Department Personnel Office where qualifying status will be checked. Once a sworn supervisor approves the renewal, the retiree must qualify at the range using their own weapon. After passing qualification, a red card will be issued that must be returned to the Personnel Office. A new department ID card will be issued with the appropriate CCW endorsement.
The range holds CCW qualification shoots every other Wednesday from 0900 – 1200 hours. There are also very limited opportunities to qualify outside of the scheduled hours. Please call the Range at 858.565.3070 for schedule and availability.
This procedure does not apply to retirees living out of state who renew via the U.S. mail.
For retired Department members who live out of the area, there is a method of renewing your ID card and CCW through the mail. (A California only CCW must be renewed every 5 years. An HR-218 CCW must be renewed every year.)
How to renew a Retired Sworn CCW or HR-218 ID card by mail:
To maintain CCW status on their retired ID card, the retiree must first contact the San Diego County Sheriff’s Firearms Range at (858) 565-3070 to have a CCW renewal packet mailed to them. The retiree must also make arrangements with a local law enforcement agency to qualify at their range. Once they receive the packet, the retiree can proceed to their local range and qualify with their weapon.
The retiree needs to then send the following to Sheriff’s Personnel: A copy of their driver’s license, the original HR-218 or CCW qualification card given by the range, and the retiree’s original San Diego Sheriff’s Department issued Retired ID Card. To ensure proper delivery, retirees are encouraged to mail these items via certified mail to:
San Diego County Sheriff’s Department
9621 Ridgehaven Ct.
San Diego, CA 92123
Once these documents are received by Personnel, local databases are checked to ensure compliance with Lautenberg. The retiree’s new ID card, reflecting their new HR-218 or CCW expiration date, will then be sent via certified mail to their residence.
