Matt Clay

Director

Matthew Clay is a native Californian, born and raised in Newport Beach. He grew up with saltwater in his veins, enjoying all ocean sports. He was always an avid fisherman and loves boating. During the summers he taught sailing. Matt had his first taste of law enforcement as a police explorer for the Newport Beach Police Department. He later changed over to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s explorer program when he learned they had a harbor division, just to get into a boat.

In 1989, he graduated from the Goldenwest College Reserve Police Academy and was hired by the Tustin Police Department. He later spent four years working as a paid reserve officer for the city of Anaheim, where he worked in patrol, warrants, vice, and street narcotics details. Matt earned his associate’s degree in liberal arts and transferred to Pepperdine University as a business major. He graduated from CSU Fullerton with a B.A. Matt eventually married his college sweetheart. They currently live in South Orange County with their two children.

Matt was hired by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in 1996 and has worked at the Vista Detention Facility and the Encinitas Patrol Station. He is currently a collision investigator in Encinitas.

Matt has also enjoyed being a station representative for the DSA and was a member of the contract negotiation committee. He has already enjoyed working with his fellow directors and looks forward to the future, representing the membership and building strong relationships with the community as well as the department.
