Matt Etchepare

Director

Matt Etchepare grew up in south Orange County. Prior to joining the Sheriff’s Department he attended Irvine Valley College and studied administration of justice and psychology. While attending college, Matt was involved with the American Criminal Justice Association and interned for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Matt also worked full time in the private sector in computer hardware sales and support.

Matt joined the Sheriff’s Department in 2000 and has concurrently been a DSA member. He started off his career working at the George Bailey Detention Facility. Matt has also worked at the San Diego Central Jail and is currently assigned to the Court Services Bureau working at the San Diego Courthouse. He has served as a training officer in the Detentions and Court Services Bureaus. Since being assigned to the Court Services Bureau, Matt has worked with San Diego District Attorney’s Office in being one of the instructors for their annual Citizen’s Academy. Matt has also been the DSA Station Representative for the San Diego Courts.

With his experience of working as a detentions/courts deputy in both bureaus, Matt also brings another unique perspective to the board. He is a proponent of the recently talked about concept of eventually going to one classification of deputy sheriff. Matt encourages input from all DSA members on how to better improve our department and association. He will make himself available in any way he can to all DSA members.

Matt’s goals while serving on the DSA board include maintaining competitive salary and benefits for existing and retired employees. He wants to improve the voter turn out for DSA member board elections, contract approvals and bylaw changes. Matt also wants to find solutions to improve overall communication disseminated from command staff down to the deputies. Other issues he is committed to address include retaining current employees, longevity pay, downtown parking, Peace Officer Bill of Rights issues, and having the proper equipment and training to effectively carry out our jobs.
