Three of the Board of Directors are elected by the Class 1 members each January, with each serving a three year term. The President, Vice-President and Secretary/Treasurer are elected by the Board of Directors from the seated Board and each office is a two year term.

Steve Purvis was born and raised in San Diego County. Growing up in the South Bay, he attended Bonita Vista High School, Southwestern Community College, and then San Diego State University. Steve has a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Criminal Justice and is working towards his masters.

Steve joined the Sheriff’s Department in 1991, and went through the 11th Corrections Academy. Prior to that, he worked for the Probation Department as an Assistant Deputy Probation Officer from 1988 to 1991. With the Sheriff’s Department, he has been assigned to four different facilities: Central, South Bay, George Bailey, and Descanso Detention Facility. He has served as a training officer, as well as, a corporal in the Detentions Bureau.

A member of the DSA since joining the department, he has been a station rep for the past several years. He has volunteered for several committees, staying active in the association.

Steve’s wife Danna is a deputy at Las Colinas Detention Facility. They have two young children. Hailing from a true law enforcement family, several of their family members either work for the department or retired from law enforcement, including his father, mother-in-law, sister, two cousins, and both their spouses..
