DSA Christmas Party To Benefit Wounded Warriors

In years past, the DSA asked members to bring canned food or toys to the Children’s Christmas Party, but this year, we’ve changed things up quite a bit. For the first time, we are asking for a monetary donation as admission—whatever you can spare, from your family to the Wounded Warrior Program at Balboa Hospital, Naval Medical Center San Diego.

Of all the things we can do to support service members fighting overseas, one of the most important is making sure that those who arrive home wounded receive the care they deserve. Balboa Hospital strives to provide not just adequate care for sailors, marines, and soldiers, but to ensure their comfort and well-being throughout treatment.

During their stay at Balboa Hospital, service members receive more than just medical care. They have the opportunity to participate in training programs to prepare them for jobs both in and out of the military. These programs help the wounded transition back into daily life and start to take care of themselves and their families again. Other programs encourage becoming active again after an injury.

Since the servicemen come from across the entire United States, not all of them have the benefit of having their family with them during rehabilitation. Luckily, technology allows families to not only speak, but see each other through video messaging. Currently, the hospital has ten computers without cameras, which means patients must travel almost two miles to speak with friends and family online.

This year, the DSA has decided to purchase webcams for use by wounded veterens at Balboa Hospital. The DSA will use the proceeds from the Children’s Christmas Party to hopefully purchase several webcams. Of course, you can always donate a new in-box webcam if you desire, but we are only asking for a small donation. All of the money raised will be used towards the purchase of the webcams or other items requested by the program.
