The Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of San Diego County (DSA) has established eight scholarships for children of DSA members. The scholarships are intended to:

  • Assist a high school graduate who desires to earn a college degree.
  • Recognize a student who has demonstrated academic ability, leadership, moral integrity and initiative.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIPS

The DSA will award a total of eight (8) scholarships each at $1,250. If the student maintains their eligibility, equal payments will be made twice during the freshman year if the student attends on a semester basis, or three times during the freshman year if attending on a quarterly basis.

These scholarships are awarded in the memory of the eight SDSO Deputies who have given their life in the line of Duty.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Scholarships will be awarded to children of DSA members. Students must be in their last year of high school and preparing for graduation. The parent must have three or more consecutive years of continuous membership in the DSA on the first day of June preceding the student’s college entrance, and be a member of the association when the scholarship is awarded, or be a retired member in good standing.

To qualify for the scholarships, the student must be accepted to an accredited two or four-year college or university during the term immediately following high school graduation.

STANDARDS FOR SELECTION

Candidates for the scholarships will be evaluated on the following standards:

1. Academic Achievement
The high school academic record of each candidate will count heavily in the choice of scholarship winners. Candidates will be expected to have sufficient credits to begin undergraduate work. Candidates must be in a college preparatory or higher program and have maintained a minimum 3.0 (“B”) grade point average based on a weighted scale.

 2. Character
The character and integrity of each candidate will be considered.

 3. Leadership
Demonstrated qualities of leadership, either in school or community activities, will also be considered.

 4. Athletic Achievement
The athletic achievement of candidates will be looked at, however, is not a determining factor for scholarships to be awarded.

MAINTAINING ELIGIBILITY

At the end of the school quarter or semester, all scholarship winners must request their school forward a transcript or record of the just completed term to the Scholarship Chairperson. In order to remain eligible, each winner will be expected to maintain a 2.0 (“C”) grade point average.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

Finalists will be chosen on the basis of the selection criteria reviewed by the Scholarship Chairperson.
